1. Debris builds up in the body cavity
The valve body has a bottom cavity. With correct installation, media enters from below the seat. If reversed, media hits the cavity first, slows down, and drops dirt – weld slag, rust, and sediment. Over time, the cavity fills up, and the gate cannot close fully. Internal leakage follows.
2. Dangerous packing replacement under pressure
Some gate valves allow packing replacement while fully open. This requires cavity pressure to be relieved away from the packing. When installed backwards, line pressure constantly pushes against the packing. If you try to change packing online, media may blow out – a serious safety risk.
3. Seat wear in high‑temperature service
A wedge gate valve needs balanced forces when closing. Reverse flow pushes the gate against one seat, causing uneven wear. This gets worse with throttling at small openings.
How to tell the correct direction?
Look for the blow‑off or drain port – it should be on the inlet side. The general rule: low in, high out. Media enters below the seat and exits above.
